A couple of years ago, I got determined to get in better shape.

I had just turned forty, and I’d noticed a bit of a weight gain.

I was also having some concerns with my digestive system, trouble sleeping and diminished energy. I knew I needed to do a lot more than just go on a diet for a month. I needed to improve my way of life. I recognized that my eating habits needed to change and I needed to get more physically active. I began by giving up meat. It wasn’t hard for me to become a vegetarian. I’d never eaten all that much red meat. I don’t actually care for it and eating it was causing me constant stomach pain. I also reduced the portions of pasta, potatoes, bread and cheese I was consuming. I completely eliminated all types of fast foods, processed foods, alcohol and sugary drinks from my diet. I concentrated more on a wide variety of fresh vegetables, fruits, tofu, nuts, seeds and whole grains. The change in my diet resulted in me feeling healthier and stronger very quickly. To raise my fitness level, I started going for runs every morning. When I first started, I had very low stamina. I could only manage to run for about half a mile before I had to slow to a walk. It didn’t take long to steadily increase my speed and distance. As I began to see an improvement in my body and energy level, I became motivated to work harder. I included more stretches and strength training exercises into my fitness program. I invested in a set of free weights, a jump rope, yoga mat and some resistance bands. The adjustment in my lifestyle has led to a long list of positive rewards.
