For some reason, the builders of my house never installed an exhaust fan on the ceiling. It’s a small bathroom, which means the humidity gets trapped whenever someone takes a shower. At first, I thought this was a minor issue. However, over time I’ve realized that the lack of an exhaust fan is going to cost me a lot of money. Without a proper exhaust fan to remove the heat and humidity from the air, mold and mildew will start to grow, and there will always be condensation lining the walls. I contacted my local HVAC provider and asked them if they could send someone to my house to discuss the humidity problem I was having. The HVAC professional agreed that an exhaust fan was necessary because it was the only way to successfully remove the moisture. I assumed an exhaust fan would be a simple and reasonably priced installation, but I was shocked to learn how expensive it would be. Not only did I need the fan, but I also needed a backdraft damper where the ductwork from the exhaust fan was exiting the house. This would allow the heat and humidity created in the bathroom to exit quickly and safely. The backdraft damper would prevent anything from outside the house coming in and causing issues. Not only did I need to purchase the backdraft damper with the exhaust fan, but I also had to pay for labor. The price added up quickly just to keep my bathroom safe from mold and mildew.
