I told my son that he should not try to install his own HVAC system. I told him he was not an HVAC expert and he didn’t know all the fine details when it came to installing the right type of HVAC system. He ended up getting a ductless mini split. First of all, he’s a non-professional so he voided the warranty from the very start. It specifically says in the manual that if the system is installed incorrectly, nothing will be covered and there certainly would be no refunds! So he installed the HVAC system alright, but it turned out that the condenser unit he got was way too large for such a system. His house was not huge and he decided to get one of the most powerful systems! He thought it would work better regardless of his small house, but he was wrong. I had to talk to him about short-cycling. What happens is the HVAC achieves the temperature control settings so fast and it turns on and off very often on shorter cycles. This causes more stress on the condenser because it has to turn on and off more often. It also shortens the lifespan of the HVAC equipment and it was a shame our son had to learn this the hard way. I mean at least he was able to install the HVAC, but he should have done just a little more research on what would be the appropriate size HVAC condenser for his house. The good news is that he can replace the condenser when it dies, but those things are expensive!
