I’m really not quite sure what most people think of when they learn that I live sustainably and off the grid. I mean, this is not the first time that’s ever been done. But when folks show up to my place, there is inevitably this look of surprise and relief. While it takes some effort to get to my place, it’s a gorgeous spot and I hope to live here forever. Yet, folks are stunned to realize that I have stuff like residential HVAC. Many are just so happy that I don’t live in a cave that they can’t get over what a cool home I have. All of this took a lot of planning and execution of plan prior to going all in on living off the grid. I built the cabin over the better part of 2 years. There is a big garden, some out buildings and some livestock as well. The solar array is the big bonus. It took me a while to save up for that thing. But that’s how I power my home. I have wifi, kitchen appliances, a stereo and residential HVAC like most everyone else. The wifi is satellite and allows me to do most of my work remotely. The ductless heat pump is great for the summer and provides me some great HVAC cooling. The heating is done by a wood stove but it’s sure nice to have that ductless heat pump when I come home from a trip and have to start the fire. It’s a great way of life for me. And I just love seeing the reaction from those who visit me way out here.
