It’s one thing to get through the summer.

It’s another thing easily to do it with a bit of money still left in the bank.

Traditionally, summer time has been a big money pit for the household budget. This is due in part to paying for added expenses for the children’s summer time activities. But a big hit both of us take each summer time is on the utility bill. Primarily that cost surge is a result of the heating and A/C load while I was in the summer. I have typically realized that it costs money to stay comfortable in the region while I was in the summer. It’s pretty much something you just have to come to terms with around here. For about 5 weeks, the rapidly adjusting temperatures outside hover around triple digits. But, there are plenty of forays into hundred degree weather. So, it makes sense that the heating and A/C utility cost will go up. However, I have recently found that there is a way to balance those costs. Instead of just over paying for heating and A/C cooling costs this year, I did a few minor things that ended up with good savings. First, I made sure the HVAC stayed inside the house by sealing it up tight. Then, I went about making sure that the curtains stayed closed in the parts of the house which acquired direct sunlight. This alone made a large difference. But ultimately, it was reigning in the HVAC setting that did the trick. It wasn’t easy at first but it didn’t take too long to get accustomed to. Instead of just putting the temperature control where both of us wanted it, both of us let the outside temps dictate the heating and A/C setting. We also supplemented with fans to help cool the skin. All in all, I have saved nearly 25 percent on just these few moves.
