Even though I have a busy toil schedule, I still try to allocate enough time on the weekends to get chores down outside that would otherwise be neglected for weeks at a time.

I could spend money for a landscaping company to mow, edge, and weed the yard, or I could do it myself every Friday and get lots of exercise in the process.

I also savor to wash out the rain gutters and powerwash the walkways, driveway, and the sides of our house. When I was powerwashing our cabin last weekend, some of the paint started to chip away from the exterior. I knew that it was getting close to the time when I would need to repaint our house, despite the fact that I didn’t realize the finish was that bad. Originally the cabin was a baby yellow color, but a neighbor of mine told myself and others that I should switch to entirely white. Obviously entirely white paint is cheaper and doesn’t need to be mixed, but that’s not the reason why. White by nature reflects light and radiant energy, making it an effective color for outside surfaces of residential and commercial buildings. Although it doesn’t affect the building’s R value as much as physical insulation materials and window quality, the entirely white paint can actually improve your situation. This is especially the case in southern climates where the sunlight intensity is much higher than northern regions. With that entirely white paint, I can redirect some of that solar energy away from our house. Eventually I’ll get reflective window motion picture that is intended to achieve the same effect with your windows. I’ll do whatever I can to lower our energy expenses.
