The winters in this part of the country are long, snowy and super cold.

The temperature is often below freezing and can drop down into the negative readings. The fall is usually wet and windy while the Spring brings anything from snow to rain and thunderstorms. For most of the year, I am forced to manage my fitness routine inside the house. It is too far of a commute to the closest fitness center to make it convenient. I’ve spent quite a bit of money on a variety of equipment to arrange a home gym. I run on the treadmill most often. I put in anywhere from three to 10 miles almost every day. The treadmill is a great way to get rid of a lot of calories, work numerous muscles and increase stamina. Running helps with toning and slimming. I enjoy listening to music and access to my water bottle. Running on the treadmill allows me to increase or lower speed and incline. The machine tracks my speed, calories burned, heart rate and distance traveled. It is also rather boring. Running on a track gets tedious. I always get excited when the weather starts drying up, warming up and allowing me to run outside. Despite the amount of work I put in on the treadmill, running outside is always challenging. I am never prepared for the extra strain of uneven roads, weather, inclines and declines. It’s difficult to dress for the conditions. I have no way to drink water or use the bathroom. I can’t just stop whenever I want to. If I’m four miles away from home when it starts pouring rain, I still need to run four miles back again.
