I wanted to understand things when I was growing up, but I was mostly too shy to ask any questions. I didn’t understand some of the most basic things like how people knew how to get from place to place. I didn’t understand how you could just look at a map and see which roads to take and that’s how you went to visit family members in another state. I just thought somehow my parents magically knew exactly where to go and I wondered how they knew. I also didn’t understand things like how the HVAC system worked. I didn’t know that the dial thermostat on the wall could be turned to the perfect temperature control settings and you would be entirely comfortable in the house. Of course, I kind of learned the hard way one day when I decided to play with the thermostat. I didn’t realize that I was doing anything wrong until my father yelled at me for turning up the heating system. I didn’t know I had the capability to do that and I definitely didn’t know how the HVAC system worked, so I ended up asking my father. He calmed down when he realized that I had no idea how it all worked. He explained how the thermostat is adjusted to a certain temperature and the heating or cooling system would engage to bring the house to that temperature. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world back then. These days, I have to laugh when I think of memories like that from when I was just a young child.
