Late last spring, I started to notice some concerns with air quality in my house.

There was more dust floating around and gathering on surfaces, forcing me to clean and vacuum more frequently.

There was a musty smell in the air, and I kept waking up in the morning with a headache. My kids complained of sore throats, itchy eyes and stuffy noses. I realized that every time the air conditioner started up, my family would start sneezing and coughing. I hired a local HVAC contractor to service the cooling system. When he took the unit apart, he showed me the buildup of contaminants within the inner workings. Along with a significant amount of dust and debris, there was mold and bacterial growth thriving on the evaporator coil. There was a great deal of algae flourishing in the condensate drain. Whenever the air conditioner would cycle on, the spores and pathogens would become airborne and get spread throughout the house. My family was breathing them in and at risk of serious health issues. Plus, the accumulation was blocking airflow through the system, making it run longer, work harder and use more energy. I was paying higher electric bills for inferior air quality and comfort. I now recognize that regular professional upkeep is essential for the air conditioner. I enrolled in a maintenance plan with the local HVAC company. They will now call me every spring as a reminder to schedule proactive inspection and tuning. A licensed technician comes to the house, inspects the entirety of the system, completes a thorough cleaning and makes any necessary adjustments.
